The year is
divided into three terms of approximately twelve weeks in duration.
Each week is normally five working days, although in the course
of productions it is often necessary to work at weekends and in
the evenings as well.
Production
based training provides the cornerstone of the school's philosophy
and approach to becoming an actor. All aspects of the work are
delivered by professional practitioners who aim to produce the
highest standard of public productions, but still provide students
with the opportunity of working in a supportive learning environment.
Over a two
year period we balance the core acting skills with exposure to
professional theatre experiences both from an acting and production
base. Each term students are encouraged to take greater responsibility
for projects undertaken, leading to a second year assignment where
they manage their own touring company. In the final term all students
work towards a final Graduation Show which will provide an invaluable
platform for their next chosen step. Our hands on assistance in
self-management as an actor leaves no one under any illusion of
what awaits graduates.
Students will
have access to a variety of rehearsal spaces and performance opportunities
at venues across the West Midlands. The Old Rep Theatre, Matthew
Boulton College Cockpit Theatre and Studio Theatre, The Midland
Arts Centre and The Crescent Studio Theatre will all be utilised
throughout the programme with a series of promenade, classical
and modern adaptations and productions. Tours of schools, arts
venues and pub theatre will also allow the students to really
develop a broad range of practical experiences relevant to a career
in the theatre industry of today. In addition the college site
also has a comprehensive range of facilities and resources.
Upon successful
completion of the HND candidates wishing to go into professional
work should be fully qualified, equipped and experienced to do
so. Alternatively, students wishing to continue their education
will be able to complete the final stages of a performing arts
degree course.
